The CanTrack Investigations Unit is a national team exclusively comprised of former Police officers, with an average recovery rate in excess of 91%. Not only are we managing the situation on the ground in your best interests, but we utilise specialist homing beacon technology in the last mile of recovery. This allows us to locate equipment indoors or under cover – a weakness of conventional tracking. We have relationships with law enforcement in the UK and abroad through our contacts in INTERPOL and through our IAATI memberships.

The Investigations Unit liaise with both the Police and yourselves throughout the process of recovery, taking this stress away from you after the initial Police report. These professional relationships means law enforcement responds well in situations individuals, businesses and other tracking companies may struggle to have them attend for a legal recovery once found. This is because they know that with CanTrack, they will not be wasting their time with tracking units reporting locations after being cut out of the vehicle, and that we have physically sight assessed the site of the recovery.

Whilst conventional tracking devices are perfectly fine for protected environments inside vehicles, they are not designed to operate in challenging environments, or with theft specifically in mind. The CanTrack Protect is incredibly robust, engineered using PA6 Nylon Polymer casing, with the electronics laid inside and filled with epoxy resin. This sets as hard as a rock, and means it can be used in the toughest of environments.

The CanTrack Protect can be jet washed at close range and is standards tested for a wide range of physical and environmental tests, as detailed in the specifications (see section below).

The unique technology in the CanTrack Protect allows it to last for years despite being battery powered and small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Conventional wired tracking devices are very easy for thieves to find, due to the fact they need to see the GPS satellite signal (which is very weak) and be wired to a power source. Without these restrictions, the Protect can be hidden in far more places, is easy to self-fit and can be moved from one vehicle or machine to another without costly installation charges.

Where do I put the units? Do they need professional installation?

The CanTrack Protect does not need professional installation, as it has no wires or connections to make. However, some insurers will not provide a policy discount for ‘self-fit’ devices so please be sure to check. We can arrange installation if you’d prefer; please email info@life-of-leisure.co.uk

Protect comes with a 3M adhesive pad which provides a very secure fitting, but it additionally has mounting holes in the corner, which can be used with security bolts.

There are no requirement to ‘see the sky’ like GPS only systems, meaning you can hide in many more places, but not in a sealed metal location. There must be gaps for the signal to escape. Your unit will come with more installation considerations in the instructions.

The CanTrack software provides feedback on signal strength, so you can find the right balance between hiding places and signal strength (which also can directly affect battery life, if located in a really poor signal location).

What is the warranty and how long does the battery last?

To put it simply, the CanTrack Protect warranty is governed by a specific number of power-ons or time elapsed since activation. The CanTrack Protect’s battery has a maximum warranty period of 24 months or 1,200 wakeups, whichever comes first. CanTrack will send the unit on a once a day wake-up as standard, but you can adjust this in the software.

The units contain non-rechargeable batteries that can last over 5 years and operate in extreme conditions (e.g. being buried deep within a vehicle/asset). The more enclosed a unit is, the higher battery consumption is required in order to transmit messages from the unit. There is a balance between hiding it well (so a prospective thief cannot find it) and how the hiding place will affect the *signal it receives.

The CanTrack Protect usually lasts up to 5 years, when situated in normal conditions. This can vary dependent on conditions, both above and below this estimated time frame. Operation outside the **temperature and impact conditions will invalidate your warranty.

**Normal conditions are defined as the device being in an area that enables receipt of good GSM signal, calibrated to one wakeup per day. Protect should not be exposed to temperatures above or below the max/min (-35 to +80 degrees Celsius).

Can you get a location from the Protect at any time?

You can schedule the unit to wake-up at pre-set times of the day, or every X hours, on motion and a wide range of other options through the software. As standard, the unit will be configured to wake-up at a specific hour in the day. However, a security protocol to combat thieves means it will wake up within 15 minutes either side of the set time (so as to be unpredictable).

You cannot wake a unit when it is in sleep mode between wake-ups. This is because it operates in a deep sleep that is completely undetectable by professional scanning equipment used by thieves to locate tracking devices. Conventional GPS devices are very easy to scan and locate using the GSM mobile signals, and this is a critical part of its operation.

Note, that when stolen, we can operate the unit anywhere up to real-time tracking after its next location report.

What is the process in the event of theft?

See the CanTrack Investigations Unit section above for detail. We require a crime reference number to deploy an Investigator, but we’ll start preparing the Protect unit, and obtaining all the information as soon as you notify us.

You can notify CanTrack of a theft 24/7, 365 days a year. They will take you through everything on the day, and ensure it is as stress free as possible. CanTrack handle all communications after the initial Police report, and up to the recovery taking place. A typical theft is resolved the same day, but a thorough investigation process takes the typical timeline as shown in the Investigations timeline below.

If safe and allowed, you can come and pick up the stolen asset yourself from the scene (our Investigator will stay with it, and Police as appropriate). If unsafe, the Police will recover back to a Police approved recovery yard, which may incur release fees.

What is the success rate of our Investigations Unit?

The first thing you must understand is that our goals are the same. CanTrack depends on ensuring that you get the successful outcome you’re looking for. This is why they invest so heavily in their Investigations Unit, and the process of recovery.

Over 15 years, there has never been a recovery rate below 90%, and it tends to be between 92-94%, which requires a huge level of consistency and underlines the quality of the service.

So, what about the times it doesn’t work? It will always be down to the same reason, the criminals finding the Protect unit. This is usually when people don’t take the advice given to them about hiding the unit, but sometimes just because the thieves are exceptionally good at finding tracking technology. Those who invest time and effort into finding that perfect place, are 9 out of 10 times going to be successful.

The Cantrack Investigations Unit analyses the reason behind any non-successful recovery, and in every case follows up with the person or business.

Will clients get any report following a theft and Investigation?

CanTrack are a professional service, and every deployment will be accompanied by a theft report detailing the timeline, photos and geographical information along with your stolen asset details. Use for insurance, company records and a detailed record of your service with CanTrack.

Is there a cost for Investigations in the event of theft?

No. All standard subscriptions come with the Investigations Unit service built-in to the cost. Please note that CanTrack will only deploy in the event of a genuine theft accompanied by a Police incident number or crime reference number.

Will you deploy without a Crime Ref No or Incident Number?

No. We require an incident number as a minimum (a temporary number issued by the Police whilst awaiting the full crime reference). We will follow up to obtain the crime reference number also. We cannot expect legal co-operation from the Police without this number, as often the theft occurs over multiple force areas.

We also often work with the Police to obtain search warrants for entry into private premises. Again, this will not be granted without the crime reference number.
